How to Calculate the Perimeter of a Rectangle?

In geometry, there are different types of shapes like square, circle, polygon, quadrilateral, cone, hexagon, etc. All of them have an area and perimeter. You will learn about how to calculate the perimeter and area of different types of shapes. Today, in this article, we are going to discuss how to calculate the perimeter of rectangle. The perimeter of a rectangle is the length of the outside border of a rectangle. There are some formulas to calculate the perimeter of a rectangle.

Before knowing about the perimeter of a rectangle and the formula that is used to calculate the perimeter of a rectangle, we must know what a rectangle is.

Rectangle: A rectangle is a two-dimensional plane figure which has four sides, among them the two opposite sides are equal in length, and all the four angles are right angle,90 degrees. A rectangle is a type of quadrilateral figure. It is also a special type of parallelogram in which all the angles are equal and right-angle.

The main properties of a rectangle are:

  • It has four sides, of which the two opposite sides are equal in length.
  • All the four angles of a triangle are equal to 90 degrees or right angles.
  • A triangle is a type of quadrilateral figure.
  • The opposite sides are parallel.

The perimeter of a rectangle: The total distance or the length of the outside boundary of a rectangle is called the boundary of a rectangle. It is the total of the four sides. Perimeter provides the total length of any shape. There are formulas to calculate the perimeter of rectangles. The perimeter of a square or rectangle is the sum of its four sides. In the case of a rectangle, the length of opposite sides is the same, then the perimeter will be the sum of twice the width of the rectangle and twice the length of the rectangle. Perimeter is needed to be calculated to find out the total length of a rectangular object or place. Suppose a rectangular-shaped park needs to give a boundary wall you have to find out the total linear measurement of the park. You want to decorate your notebooks with ribbons by their sides and to find out how much ribbon is needed you need to calculate the perimeter of the notebook The area of a rectangle can be calculated with a simple formula. The formula for calculating the area of a rectangle is

Area of a rectangle= (length× width) square units.

Formula to calculate the perimeter of a rectangle: With the formula, we can easily calculate the perimeter of any rectangles. As the perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of its four sides, so the perimeter of a triangle is the sum of twice the width and twice the length.

So, for the formula to calculate perimeter of rectangle is

Perimeter(p) = 2width(w) + 2length(l)

P = 2w +2l

So, p = 2(w + l)

Therefore, the perimeter of a rectangle is p=2(w + l)

To calculate the perimeter of a rectangle you have to follow three steps.

  1. You have to know the width and length of the rectangle.
  2. After that, you have to put the values of the length and within the formula.
  3. Then solve the equation and the value of the perimeter will come out from it.

Let’s have an example to understand this formula.

Example: The length of a rectangle is 10 cm. and its width is 15cm. Now find out its perimeter.

Perimeter, p= 2(length +width)

P = 2(10 + 15) cm

P = 2 × 25cm

P = 50cm

Therefore, the perimeter of the rectangle is 50cm.

If the perimeter of a rectangle is given and the value of only one side is given we can find out the value of other sides from the formula.

Here is an example:

The perimeter of a rectangle is 20 m. One side is 4m. Find out the other sides.

As in a rectangle to sides are of the same length, so the lengths of the two sides are4 m and 4m.

We have to find the other side from the formula.

We know, perimeter = 2(length + width)

Here 20 = 2(4+w)

20 = 2 × 4 + 2 × w

20 = 8 + 2w

2w = 20 – 8

2w = 12

w = 12/2

Therefore, w is 6.

So, the length of the other two sides is 6m.and 6 m.

So, we can calculate the perimeter and area of a rectangle easily with these formulas. To know more about rectangles and other mathematical topics you can install the Cuemath app and expand your knowledge.
